Our History

Established in 1975 as Selected Lock & Hardware Pty Ltd by Maurice and Penny Lowndes, with a singular branch in North Melbourne and four employees the company has gone from strength to strength to become the well-known business it is today. The name change to Access Hardware occurred in 1985, with the first branch opening in New South Wales in 1995 followed closely by two Tasmanian sites (Hobart and Launceston) in 1997 and 1998.

In 2006 and 2007 we saw the opening of South Australia and Brisbane branches, making Access Hardware accessible in every state along the east coast of Australia.

In 2024, the company continues to prosper and now employs over 270 staff nationally, operating branches in most capital cities around Australia.

The story of what started as a small family-run business continuing to be a success story nearly 50 years down the track is one the Lowndes family is proud of. The business itself is still a family-run operation and is owned and managed by the Lowndes family after being handed down generations. Initially just supplying hardware and locks the business has diversified to supply, install and provide ongoing maintenance of hardware, locksmithing, security solutions, bathroom equipment, automatic doors, high security detention equipment and more.

In addition to stable ownership and direction, other key factors have contributed to the continual success and growth of the business. The focus on the value of staff, development of key relationships with both customers and suppliers and the strategic acquisition of specific businesses around the nation that have expanded our ability to supply product and service solutions around the country.

Acquisitions have come over the years with Secure Locksmiths (TAS) acquired in 2008, Specialty Hardware and Access Doors in 2010, Architectural hardware and locksmithing (SA) in 2012, Architectural Hardware Northern Locksmiths (NT) in 2013, Access Entry (VIC) in 2014, Jacksons Security (TAS) in 2015, Lockwizard Locksmiths in 2017 and 2019 saw the acquisition of Total Lock and Alarm as well as FRANKsecure.

The business created a purpose built National Keying Centre in 2009 to support our large locksmithing division and in 2013 launched our National Distribution Centre based in Victoria.
